I did the same installation successfully on several Linux SuSe 7.x
machines with two more parameters for configure:

  --prefix=${HOME}/.gnu  # or some other place to put the binary
  --host=$MACHTYPE       # resolves on my Linux as i686-suse-linux

I put all that stuff into a script which works fine on SuSe. If you
want you may download and try it out, type install.gpc -h for help:
