Using Adriaan's attached diff for the additional patching, the  
snapshot also builds without problems on powerpc-apple-darwin8 with  
gcc-4.1.2.

results Adriaan got with his i386-darwin build with the exception of  
two additional unsupported tests and one additional test failure:
